“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16 NKJV)
Why BOLDLY? Because in the New Covenant, we have a GREAT HIGH PRIEST, JESUS CHRIST, who was in ALL POINTS tempted as we are, yet WITHOUT SIN (Hebrews 4:15). We only don’t have a GREAT High Priest but a High Priest FOREVER (Hebrews 5:6).
Contrary to the New Covenant, the Old Covenant was based on man’s merit, man’s ability, man’s work and labor to enter into righteousness. It was a rule based system that people were measured according to their obedience. They were under the law that demanded perfection that no one could fulfill it.
But, THANK GOD for His abounding love, that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to fulfill the law. Only the Perfect Jesus can accomplish the purpose of the law. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Matthew 5:17) Can you imagine that when someone breaks one law, it’s considered breaking them all? What an impossibility that could be! But WITH GOD, all things are possible.
Our righteousness is no longer a result of our own labor but God’s favor. “For the Law was given through Moses, but grace [the unearned, undeserved favor of God] and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17 AMP) Our righteousness is no longer all about what we can do but what Jesus has done! It is a GIFT but it takes abundance of grace to believe and receive it because it’s TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE! This is GOOD NEWS!
We always have the propensity to earn righteousness by our own doings because by default we always love to be commended and merited by our own works. It elates us to hear that we have been recognized awarded by our own efforts. Well, it is not bad at all to do the best we can and achieve merits and awards. BUT when it comes to our right standing with God, we need to redefine it. We need to renew our thinking that righteousness is a gift lest anyone should boast.
“Because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the ABUNDANCE OF GRACE and the FREE GIFT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:17 ESV)
Grace and truth came into being, personified, through Jesus Christ. Grace is the unearned, undeserved, unmerited favor of God. HE favors us and sees us beautiful with the moral grandeur and excellencies of Jesus Christ. HE sees our slate clean by the power of His Blood. Our sins and unrighteousness, He remembers NO MORE (Hebrews 8:12). This is the powerful reason why we can come BOLDLY before His presence knowing that our Heavenly Father no longer have a reason to reject us but with open loving arms accept us.
When Jesus died at the cross and the veil that separated us from the Holy of Holies which refers to the inner sanctuary of the Tabernacle where God dwelt was torn from top to bottom, gracing us now to come boldly before Him. The Blood of Jesus made the way.
Then, there’s more to this verse.
“Let us therefore come boldly to the THRONE OF GRACE, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16 NKJV)
Haven’t you noticed that the name of His Throne is GRACE? It is then the Throne of unearned, undeserved, unmerited favor of God. That means when we know who we are, the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN CHRIST, our identity gives us access to ask Him the desires of our hearts even if we think we aren’t qualified or deserving. This is the reason why we need to renew our minds because we can only go, receive and achieve as far as we know. When our minds are set on “sin” consciousness, how can we even come boldly before Him let alone ask. We need to change the way we think and switch our focus into “SON” consciousness. The finished work of Jesus Christ qualified us to partake of the riches in glory of the inheritance of the saints. It is therefore imperative for us to put on the helmet of salvation where our minds are conformed to His word and our thoughts taken captive into the obedience of Christ.
Our knowledge of what Jesus has done for us positions us to audaciously believe, claim, expect and receive great things that He has in store for us. What great new and better covenant He has given us with better promises. Our knowledge of this truth empowers us to walk and explore all that He has revealed to us. Don’t you think we have GOOD NEWS that is TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? Our reconciliation with HIM by the power of the Blood of Jesus and the Resurrection Power of Christ in us made a way for us to live a victorious life, an overcomer’s life, a nothing-missing-nothing-broken life, an abundant life.
Prayer: Father, thank You for giving us Your most precious Son, Jesus, Who made it all possible for us to come boldly before Your presence and enjoy being with You without guilt and condemnation. Thank You, Jesus, for giving us Yourself, fully obedient to the Father bridging and bringing intimacy to its utmost degree. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for revealing to us Who Jesus is and what He has done that we may come to know our true identity of being the righteousness of God in Christ. Amen.
