“Let us therefore COME BOLDLY to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)
Mind His word that says come BOLDLY … not timidly nor arrogantly. Boldly means “in a confident and courageous way; showing a willingness to take risks.”
God is not intimidated by our timidity or arrogance, but I believe He gave us His word that we may know how to approach Him that would benefit us to the utmost. People perish due to lack of knowledge, or may have rejected or forgotten it (Hosea 4:6). But our God Who is rich in mercy and abounding in love is so committed to our good that He gave us His word with His breath of life breathed into it that is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,so that we may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Many still come before God begging. Do you know why? Because our confidence comes from knowing that by the power of the finished work of Jesus, ALL the wrath of God has been exhausted upon Him at the cross. If ALL, then no wrath is left for us. Though we still fall short of His glory, God has already dealt with our unrighteousness and remembers them NO MORE (Hebrews 8:12). But having no knowledge of Who Jesus is and what He has done puts us in a position of fearfully coming before Him due to the consequences of the sins we have committed that may lead us to a refusal or denied entry into His throne or simply be rejected. When we don’t know who we are IN CHRIST, we can never come boldly to Him in full confidence that He will accept us with open arms. Instead, we come to Him seeing ourselves like a worm in front of a great and mighty God. This is the very reason why you and I have been commissioned to preach the gospel of peace which is the reconciliation between God and man by the power of the cross that more will come to know how deeply loved we are by our Heavenly Father.
Some come before God arrogantly and pridefully. But then again, because of His great love for us, He sometimes shows Himself strong to those who dare Him to show His power. No one can box the greatness of His sovereignty for He deals with us individually, differently and accordingly. But there is always a way that we can approach Him with revelation knowledge that comes from His word that says, “Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.'” (Luke 4:12). Indeed all things are permissible but not everything is beneficial.
We are encouraged to get understanding in all our getting. We press on for the revelation of His word and walk in obedience for it to be profitable.
To come boldly is to believe in the promise to enter His rest. The power of reconciliation by the shed Blood of the Lamb is to be believed, for without faith we cannot please God. “For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it (Hebrews 4:2). This only means one thing, that when we hear the word of God without believing and receiving, we gain nothing and this simply denotes “disobedience”. Ouch … I never saw this until now. “Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience.” (Hebrews 4:6) No wonder He said, “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 4:7)
Take heart, worry not, for our God is merciful and gracious. His love is patient and long suffering. He is a God of many chances. He never imposes but He woos and invites us to come to know Him in ways beyond we can think or imagine that will set our hearts at rest in His love for us. Then, with captured hearts, we can now come to Him with lifted heads ready to see Him face to face without guilt, shame and condemnation.
We who believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ no longer come to Him in hesitation but with full conviction and assurance that rejection has been fully eradicated from His vocabulary. Denied entry is no longer a possibility when we come boldly all because what’s left in His heart for you and me is His deep love and longing that His children will come home into His loving embrace enjoying the pleasures forevermore that He has prearranged and made ready for us to partake.
Truly there is only one way to have eternal life. “And this is the way to have eternal life–to know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the One You sent to earth.” (John 17:3)
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You, for choosing me and calling me BY NAME to come boldly into Your throne of grace that I may obtain mercy and find grace in time of need. Thank You Jesus for giving Your life for me that I may enjoy life and have it more abundantly through my fellowship and intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit Who abides in me forever, made possible by the power of Your love. Amen!
